In this course we will delve into the thought of Plotinus, one of the key figures of Neoplatonism, exploring his fundamental ideas that have profoundly influenced Western philosophy. Throughout the course, we will address the following topics:
The One: We will study the conception of ‘The One’ in Plotinus’ philosophy, as the supreme principle and source of all being, beyond any duality or definition.
Emanation: We will analyse the process of emanation from ‘The One’, explaining how the different levels of reality derive from this primordial source without diminishing its perfection.
Beauty: We will explore the idea of beauty in Plotinus, understood as a manifestation of the divine, and its relation to the human soul and the search for truth.
Neoplatonism: We will delve into Neoplatonism as a philosophical school, contextualising Plotinus within this current and studying its influence on later philosophy, from Antiquity to modern thought.
